On 29 July 2010, the Bavarian Order of Merit was awarded to Walter Schatt by Horst Seehofer, Minister President of Bavaria, at the Residenz in Munich.
At the festive ceremony, at which a further 56 personages received the distinction, the Minister President stated, "Committed and dynamic personalities with incredible achievements to their name thanks to a willingness to work hard, their sense or responsibility and sheer perseverance are an asset to Bavaria. It is people like them who are the architects of the state, and their contribution has helped it move forward. It was in order to acknowledge the efforts of such motivated and dynamic citizens that the Bavarian Order of Merit was instituted in 1957."
The Bavarian Order of Merit is awarded in grateful recognition and honour of outstanding contributions to the Free State of Bavaria and the Bavarian people. Currently there are 1,857 holders of the decoration, which is limited to 2,000 living holders altogether.
